Alvaro Paz (he/him/él)
Community Resource Coordinator
Alvaro Paz was born and raised in Honduras, Central America, and has a Bachelor's degree in International Relations obtained from the Catholic University of Honduras. Before moving to the Unaccompanied Children's team, Alvaro originally joined MIRC as a Bilingual Outreach Coordinator for the Immigrant Workers' Rights team. Since 2017 he has supported different types of non-profit organizations focused on community environmental development. His last role was Community Development Specialist at El Concilio.
Alyx Pedraza (she/they)
Staff Attorney
Alyx joined MIRC as a staff attorney in August 2024. She received her JD from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in April 2024, and her B.A. in Political Science and Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Alyx's experiences vary greatly in the public sector ranging from interning with her local Mayor's Office to interning with the Michigan Majority Senate Counsel's office and all in between. Alyx has also been with the U.S. Army since April 2018 and continues her service there as well. The root of this career pursuit is that her parents came from Mexico City; and although Alyx
was born in Wisconsin, she grew up with the hardships of undocumented immigrants and continues to advocate for her community.
Amanda Sano-Hesskamp (she/her)
Staff Attorney
Amanda joined the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center as a Staff Attorney in May 2021. She currently works on the unaccompanied children’s team in the Ypsilanti office. Prior to joining MIRC, Amanda interned and externed at Legal Services of South Central Michigan. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University for Political Science-Pre law, and her Juris Doctorate from Michigan State University College of Law. Amanda is originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil and moved to Michigan with her family in 1999.
Amanda Schwartz
Staff Attorney
Amanda Schwartz is a Staff Attorney with the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, where she has been a part of MIRC’s Unaccompanied Children’s team for the past three years. She is originally from the Metro Detroit area. Amanda received her B.A. from the University of Michigan, where she studied International Security, Norms and Cooperation, as well as double majoring in Spanish. Amanda went on to Boston University School of Law for her J.D. She also presents on Special Immigrant Juvenile classification in a variety of settings, including internal presentations, for University of Michigan students, and at AILA conferences.
Amy Muñoz (she/her)
Legal Assistant
Amy (she/her) is a Legal Assistant on the UC team at our Grand Rapids office. In 2021, she graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Economics and a minor in Latin American & Caribbean Studies, Human Rights Track. During her undergrad, she participated in the Immigrant Justice Lab (IJL). Amy was born and raised in Holland, MI to immigrant parents and is fluent in Spanish, English, and French.
Amyra Woods (she/her)
Staff Attorney
Amyra Woods joined the Michigan Immigrants' Rights Center as a staff attorney. Prior to working at MIRC, she worked in a nonprofit legal organization's COVID-19 Emergency Eviction Prevention Team. Woods has worked on Family Law, Landlord-Tenant, Civil Rights and Immigrations law cases in private practice. Woods graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor's in Journalism and a minor in Spanish. She obtained a Master of Arts in Conflict Resolution and System Design along with a Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University’s Law School. As a law student, she worked in Wayne State University’s Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic.
Woods will be based in the Detroit office and be part of the Helpdesk Team providing legal information to the public. Woods' goal is to connect people to necessary resources to assist individuals with making the best decisions for themselves and families to thrive safely and freely.
Ana Arvizu-Mata (she/her)
Paralegal
Ana Arvizu-Mata is a paralegal on the unaccompanied minors team based out of the Grand Rapids office. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Western Michigan University in 2017. Ana is originally from Guanajuato, Mexico but relocated to Grand Rapids at 4 years old and is passionate about helping and giving back to her community. In her free time she enjoys reading, cooking and spending time with family and friends.
Ana Raquel Devereaux (she/her)
Managing Attorney
Ana Raquel Devereaux has been an attorney with Michigan Immigrant Rights Center since December of 2014. She began her work with MIRC representing unaccompanied children seeking asylum, SIJS, and T- visas. Ana Raquel has also represented victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Ana Raquel now supervises MIRC's unaccompanied children's team, which includes attorneys and non-attorneys accros MIRC's three offices representing children in federal foster care and released to sponsors. Ana Raquel is a fluent Spanish speaker and she attended Calvin College for her undergraduate degree in International Relations with a minor in Latin American Studies and received her J.D. from Wayne State University.
Andrea Lima (she/her)
TFC Legal Assistant
Before starting at MIRC, Andrea was a high school teacher for eleven years. She has taught in a few different places, and even internationally, but the experience that most relates to the work she does at MIRC has been her experience teaching newcomer English learners in southwest Detroit and Pontiac. The thing Andrea most enjoyed about being a teacher was being able to advocate for kids and make a tangible, positive impact in their lives. Although she is somewhat new to the legal environment, Andrea is pleased that she is able to continue championing the rights of children as part of the UC team.
On the weekends, you might find her at an arty venue enjoying a live music show, hiking a nature trail, or testing out some recipes in the kitchen, especially different types of salsas.
Angela Servin-Martinez (she/her)
Supervising Program Coordinator
Angela is a recent graduate of the University of Michigan. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Spanish and English and minor(s) in Community Action and Social Change and Latino/a studies. She was born in GTO, Mexico and was raised in Southwest Detroit. Angela is a DACA recipient who is very passionate about immigration law & doing equitable work around this. She has been involved in many non-profits around Detroit that focus on immigrant rights. Angela hopes to become an immigration attorney.
Anna Hill Galendez (she/her)
Supervising Attorney
Anna joined the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center as a staff attorney in 2013 and currently serves on MIRC's farmworker and immigrant worker litigation team and advocacy team. She began her time at MIRC focused on impact litigation and policy advocacy for a broad range of immigrant rights issues, including federal litigation to ensure immigrant access to public benefits and programs. She has also representing clients in seeking U-visas, naturalization, asylum, and in removal proceedings after workplace raids. Anna graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and the University of California, Berkeley. She grew up in California where she worked at Head Start and for the USDA Agrability program, prior to law school. She is fluent in Spanish.
Azeneth Salazar (she/her)
Paralegal
Azeneth joined MAP with Farmworker Legal Services and moved to the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center UC Released team as a paralegal in 2023. Azeneth was born and raised in Texas and is a native Spanish speaker. She has worked with the Latinx community for 25 years in public health and courts. She likes spending time with her family.
Benjamin Frey (he/him)
Paralegal
Ben was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in Sociology with honors and Spanish, with a minor in Intergroup Relations Education (2016), and a master’s degree from New York University in Translation & Interpreting (2022). Actively engaged in these communities, he has mentored youth and advocated for vulnerable populations. Benjamin has worked for nearly a decade as a youth and club rowing coach in Ann Arbor and became involved in U.S. immigration law during his two years living in Ecuador, where he taught English at Escuéla Politécnica Nacional.
He began working as a paralegal for MIRC on the Ypsilanti Office Unaccompanied Children's team in the Fall of 2024, marking a return to immigration law after a Fulbright Scholarship teaching English in Ghent, Belgium. He is enthusiastic about contributing his skillset to the non-profit realm, where his unique background can be put to use aiding those who need it most and strengthening the Michigan community.
Brad Maurer (he/him)
Staff Attorney
Brad Maurer joined the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center's Unaccompanied Children's Program as a staff attorney in July 2021. Before coming to MIRC, Brad worked with New York County Defender Services, a public defender office in downtown Manhattan, for eight years. In his time as a public defender, Brad represented indigent clients as a trial attorney in a wide range of criminal cases. Brad also served as NYCDS's DNA & Forensics Specialist, advising other attorneys regarding the forensic evidence in their cases as well as advocating and publishing with respect to broader legal and policy issues in the forensics arena. Brad received a B.S. in Neuroscience from Lafayette College, a Master's degree in Science Writing from Johns Hopkins University, and a J.D. from New York University.
Brianna Llamas (she/her)
Legal Assistant
Brianna Llamas is a Legal Assistant at MIRC and her pronouns are she/ her. Brianna graduated with honors from Michigan State University, double majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology. She interned at the Michigan Attorney General’s Office in their Conviction Integrity Unit. Where she was motivated by a profound commitment to fairness and truth, dedicated to addressing wrongful convictions and upholding justice. She is filled with anticipation and a profound sense of purpose, as she eagerly embraces the opportunity to commence her journey at the MIRC. Driven by a deep-rooted desire to assist individuals akin to her own family who have gone through similar immigration processes, she is ready to make a meaningful difference.
Cade Fisher (he/him)
Paralegal
Cade joined the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center in August 2023. Prior to working at MIRC, Cade was a volunteer legal administrative assistant at the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project in Arizona, working with adults in immigration detention. Cade graduated from Goshen College with a B.A. in Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies. In his free time, Cade enjoys rock climbing and baking with sour dough.
Christine Sauvé, LMSW-Macro (she/her)
Community Engagement + Communications
Christine Sauvé, LMSW leads community engagement and communications strategies for the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, working to advance narrative and policy change in partnership with immigrant communities across Michigan. Christine regularly speaks to community groups, elected officials, and advocates about issues related to immigration, inclusion, and equity. She is a member of the Michigan Advocacy Program’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, and also serves as Co-Chair for the Detroit City Council’s Immigration Task Force. Previously Christine served as Director for the Welcoming Michigan project and contributed to several publications on the topic of social cohesion. In 2013 she was one of ten national leaders honored by The White House as a Champion of Change for her efforts to promote immigrant inclusion. Christine served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mauritania and Senegal, and is a member of the National Association of Social Workers. She is a graduate of the New Detroit Multicultural Leadership program, Detroit Equity Action Lab, Welcoming Communities Transatlantic Exchange, and Detroit Revitalization Fellows. Christine received her MSW and undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. She is a strong advocate for social justice, loves birding and dark chocolate, and is happy to call Detroit home.
Clarissa Grimes (she/her)
Staff Attorney
Clarissa is MIRC's staff attorney for clients in Washtenaw County, and is also responsible for coordinating the pro bono effort to support Afghan refugees in Michigan. Prior to joining MIRC in 2021, Clarissa worked as an Attorney Advisor at the Department of Justice, clerking for the Immigration Judges at the Detroit Immigration Court. She also worked for the Department of Health and Human Services to provide residential care to unaccompanied children entering the United States. Clarissa graduated from Michigan State University College of Law in 2018. While studying at MSU Law, she worked as a student attorney at Farmworker Legal Services and the University of Michigan Human Trafficking Clinic. Clarissa speaks Spanish and is dedicated to improving access to justice in Michigan.
Courtney Estes-Omos (she/her)

Courtney is a Paralegal for the Unaccompanied Children team at our Ypsilanti office. She received her B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature from Adrian College in 2017, where she also studied abroad for a year in Chile. Prior to working for MIRC, she worked in an immigration law firm as a legal assistant and interpreter. Her passions include helping people, learning languages and traveling.
Cristina Cakirlar (she/her)
Staff Attorney
Cristina Cakirlar joined the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center in July 2022. She is a Staff Attorney on the Unaccompanied Children Team. Cristina is originally from Moldova, but she also lived and studied in Romania and France. She received her Bachelor of Laws degree from Romania in 2018, and her J.D. from MSU in 2021. During law school, Cristina worked for the Immigration Law Clinic at MSU, where she managed various immigration cases. Her particular interests include human rights, social justice, immigration, and family law. Cristina is also fluent in Romanian, Russian, and French
Damaris Vail-Mencho (she/her)
Paralegal
Damaris Vail is working as a paralegal with the unaccompanied team in Grand Rapids, MI. She recently obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Public and NonProfit Administration from Western Michigan University. Damaris is a Guatemalan American, as a first generation student her work has consisted in the Driver's Licence for all movement. Prior to joining MIRC she has learned about immigration law through interning at Immigration Law and Justice and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. Damaris hopes to continue her education in Public Policy and Immigration law. She is also a fluent Spanish speaker.
Dan Keener (He/They)
Data Coordinator
Dan Keener joined Michigan Immigrant Rights Center in 2023 as a Data Coordinator in our Ypsilanti office with the Unaccompanied Children program. Dan went to the Ohio State University where he received a B.A. in Political Science with a specialization in Democracy and the Law. Prior to MIRC, he was a John Glenn Fellow through Ohio State's Washington Academic Internship Program, interned at Ohio Franklin County Public Defender's Office as a Juvenile Law Clerk. In his spare time, Dan enjoys studying languages such as French, Spanish, and Mandarin.
Debora Cunha (she/her)
Supervising Program Coordinator
Debora Cunha is a Supervising Program Coordinator at our Ypsilanti/ Detroit Offices, focused on the Unaccompanied Minors Program . As an immigrant herself, Debora arrived as a minor in the United States from Brazil and is happy to assist unaccompanied minors through her own experiences. She is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish and is pursuing a major in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolutions. Her hobbies include kickboxing and scuba diving.
Deddi Gaston (she/her)
Paralegal
Deddi joined the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center in January 2022. She is a bilingual legal assistant working specifically with farm and agricultural workers. Deddi was born in Puerto Rico and is a native Spanish speaker. She resided in Boston before moving to Michigan in 2005. Deddi worked many years as a medical assistant providing interpreting services for the Latinx community at various Michigan community organizations and mental health foundations. She transitioned to legal assistant during the pandemic working alongside a private practice immigration attorney. Deddi enjoys working with the public and helping her immigrant worker rights team. She is dedicated to advocating for immigrant rights, and racial equity.
